KU-NAN AND THE TIGER KING (a mongolian tale) Part 2
The sky grew dark, Ku- Nan returned home very unhappy. Upon returning home he told his parents what had happened. His parents were also very upset. If they stopped him from going, the khan would
have him put to death. If they let him go he would be killed by the tigers or the tiger king himself. They begain to weep uncontolable.
During the night a old white haired holly man came to their yurt. My lad he adressed Ku- Nan do
not be down cast. The tiger king is afraid of a brave man. As long as you keep your home and family in mind, you will be able to over come any hardship. Go and I will give you a dappled poney to ride on.
Good luck to you. Then he desapeared . When Ku-Nan went outside the dappled poney was waiting for him.
The skies grew lighter. Ku- Nan took his bow and arrow bag and his dagger. He bid his parents
good by and got on his pony. At first the poney trotted along at a normal pace then later he broke into
a canter, then a gallop. It was going so fast that Ku-Nan could only see the yurts he was passing as a blur.As he aproached a yurt on the road he saw a wolf about to attack a little girl.Ku- Nan slipped a arrow to his bow and let it fly. The wolf fell dead.
An old woman ran out of the yurt. Seeing that Ku - Nan had saved her granddaughter she
invited him in for some milk tea. Before he left she gave him a sheep bone and told him to take it, it would be of some use to him in the future.
With her gift in his hand he rode on. As he rode along he found his path blocked by a broad river . Sudenly the water rose and formed great billows. A huge turtle emerged and swam to the river bank. He
told Ku-Nan to turn back for he could never cross the river.
"Oh surley " Ku-Nan replied' " All difficulties can be overcome."
The turtle replied that he needed Ku-Nans help. His left eye ached so badly that he wanted it
taken out, so he could replace it with a new one.
Ku-Nan helped him and when he looked at the eye in his hand he saw it had turned into a
beautiful flawless pearl. When he looked at the pearl his eyesight became very sharp, he could see a group of yurts across the river in the distance. Ku - Nan remounted his poney and plunged into the
river. As the water touched the pearl it parted, leaving a dry path in front of them. He rode across to the other side and the water filled in behind them.
Ku - Nan soon reached the yurts he had seen in the distance. An old shepered was softly weeping .Concerened Ku- Nan stopped dismounted and adressed the old man. " Grandfather what
makes you so sad? Please tell me , perhaps I can be of some help to you. "
The old man replied ," Even if I tell you ,you wont be able to help me. Yesterday my only daughter
was carried off by the tiger king. I don't know if shes alive or dead." The old man begain to sob.
Ku-Nan told him not to loose heart. He was sure she was still alive and he would go and rescue her.
The old man gave him tea and Ku-Nan was soon on his way again.
Before dark Ku-Nan arrived at the place the tiger king lived. He lived in a stone cave in the side
of the mountain. Ther were ten tigers standing guard outside the cave. Ku-Nan fished the sheep bone
out of his bag and threw it to them, while they were fighting over it he entered the cave and found
the sheperds daughter. She told him the tiger king had been gone since morning. She wanted him to
hide but he scooped her up and took her outside. The tigers were still fighting over the bone.He put
her on the poney and was taking her back to her home when suddenly a gust of wind blew at them from the north.
