THE OLD WOMAN AND THE TIGER
Long ago in ancient china a old woman lived with her son in a mountain village. They were very
poor. The old woman worked very hard growing a large garden and crops. Her son worked for other
people in the village and often went hunting at night for meat for his mother and himself.
One night while the son was gone hunting in the mountains a tiger found him, killed him, and ate
most of him. What was left of him the tiger hid for later.
When the son did not come back, the old woman went to look for him. She did not find him.She went to the town magistrate who was to busy to look for him.The old woman kept bothering him until he finally sent some of his men to look for the son.
All the men ever found of the son was part of the leg. The old woman was heart broken and
demanded justice from the magistrate. Again he was too busy to look for the tiger. Again the old woman
kept bothering him until he sent some of his men to find the tiger. The tiger was found and brought before the magistrate.
Because the son was the only person the old woman had to help her and take care of her
the tiger was sentenced to take care of the old woman the rest of her life. The tiger begain his punishment the very next morning.
Every morning the old woman woke up there was a pile of fresh meat and animal furs on her door
step. The meat she had left over she sold to people in the village. The furs she tanned and sold also.
Soon the old woman was very rich , but the tiger never stopped. He made sure that there was always fresh meat and furs every morning until the day the old woman died.
When the old woman died the tiger appeared at her grave he cryed out then disappeared.
He was never seen in the village again, but he was seen every night guarding her grave. Even today the tiger is said to be one of the gardians of the dead.
