KU-NAN AND THE TIGER KING (a Mongolian tale )Part 1
Long long ago in a land of the khans lived a poor herdsman and his wife. They had three children that all died. The herdsman and his wife lived a very poor solitary life for many years.
Then one cold winter night the wife unexpectedly gave birth to a boy child. The couple was over joyed but very worried about rasing the child. They only had a few animals and it was the middle of winter.
The herdsman went to milk their cow because the child would need the milk.
The child did not grow by the day but by the hour. Before the next evening he had grown taller and sturdier than a man. The couple was astonished and delighted. They named him Ku- Nan which means ancient south.
On the first day the child ate the first goat. The second day he ate the other goat. The couple wept because all they had left was the milk cow.
On the third day Ku-Nan went to his parents and begged them to let him leave to find work. His
mother tearfully took his hand and agreed, she thought perhaps the khan would have work for him, Ku-
Nan pondered this awhile then agreed.
After leaving he headed north on a empty stomach. Half way there he met a hungry wolf. As soon as it saw him it jumped on him, but Ku-Nan tackled it, killed it and skined it. He built a fire and roasted the meat. Which he ate hungerly. With his stomach full he continued on until just about dark he reached the khans yurt.
The sly old khan decided to test the youth. He had a cow killed and roasted, Ku-Nan ate the whole cow and gnawed on the bones. The khan then kept the boy in his yurt as a attendant and personal body guard.
Ku-Nan went hunting deep in the forest with the khan . They always came back with their bags full.
One day they were hunting deep in the forest when the hunting party was attacked by a huge tiger.
The khan was so frieghtened that he broke out in a cold sweat and whipped his horse into a gallop.Khans
other servents also fled in fear. But Ku-Nan did not stir. As the tiger sprang upon him he comly dodged to one side, grabbed one of the tigers hind legs, and swung the beast against a big tree. With a crash the tiger lay motionless on the ground, Ku-Nan put the carcases over his shoulder and started twoards the khans yurt.
When the khan reached his yurt he was still so upset he could not get off his horse. His servents helped him down. Ku- Nan appeared carrying the tiger. When Khan saw the tiger he panicked. He rushed
into his yurt and barred the doors. He yelled to his servents not to let the tiger in and to protect him with
their lives. When he herd it was a dead tiger Ku-Nan had brought he became furiose and begain cursing
Ku- Nan he then took the dead tiger into his yurt.
The khan had the tiger skin made into a mattress for himself and then decided he wanted the tiger kings skin to make a cloak for himself. Thus he commanded Ku-Nan to catch and kill the tiger king with in three days.If he were to fail at this the khan would have him executed. Ku-Nan felt very dejected. The tiger king was said to live in a cave in the far northren mountains. The cave was guarded by lots of tigers. No one had ever made it to the cave.No one had ever made it back from trying.
