THE GATHERING
Pai Lung opened one big yellow eye. The warm sunlight made him sleepy. He'd taken a quick nap and now it was time to go. He slowly unfolded his long white reptilian body, stretched, and slowly slid off
the rock into the warm lake water.
Pai Lung glided across the the water towards the shore. A cool spring breeze blew across the lake
and the sky was a rich turquoise blue. The shore sparkled in the sun as pai approached it.
He reached the shore and climbed out, shaking the water off his long white body, and streched
again. It was almost time to shed again and his skin felt tight and itchy. One more good stretch and he
started towards the trees along the shore.
By the time he reached the trees, the breeze had shifted and Pai lung could smell tea cakes. The smell made his stomach growl and he began to hurry. He soon came to a clearing where a small waterfall and stream ran through the meadow. There next to the waterfall was a long jade table, upon the table was tray after tray of tea and moon cakes. There were smaller plates and tea cups stacked to one side and two
large tea pots next to them.
Pai Lung was overwhelmed by the good smells and he hurried to the table and began filling his
plate with sweet meat cakes. He was reaching for the bean paste cakes, when he herd another stomach growling, as he turned he saw his cousin crossing the last few steps to the table.
"Happy Spring Festival cousin"! Pai said
"Happy Spring Festival"!Nuwa said.
"This is my favorite festival of the year. Oh, and smell the leeche blossoms, its the only time of the year they bloom here."
The two soon found a spot to sit and were busy eating when two more cousins, Long Dragon and Pearl
Dragon came into sight. After they all had given each other proper greetings and were busy eating, the rest of the dragon family arrived. They were talking and sharing stories when the sound of bells and
wind chimes carried across the meadow.
As the silence settled over the dragons, the musical sounds became clearer and the musical voices of the Qin (Chinese unicorns) filled the meadow as they arrived. Soon they were all siting, talking,
eating and enjoying themselves.
As the warm spring morning wore on, all the guests had all arrived .There were all the mythical and
auspisious creatures of ancient china. They were full of tea and moon cakes, they had drank their
fill of tea and were beginning to look for a place to take a nap, when the sky began to fill with white
fluffy clouds.
The clouds began drifting twords the meadow and the gathering. Pai Lung and the others smiled with joy when they saw the first cloud dancer appear and gracefully float down from the clouds .While they began to fall asleep , the cloud dancers began telling the stories of ancient times and how things came to be in the mortal world. Soon the spring festival gatherers were fast asleep dreaming the stories being told. And so begins the cloud dancers tales.
