YEH --- SHEN a chinese cinderella story
Once upon a time, long ago during the Qin and Han dynasties, emporer Wu had two wives. Each of his wives gave birth to a babby girl. Not too long after the birth one of the wives died and then emporer wu. This left the one small daughter whos name
was Yeh---Shen to be raised by the step mother.
As the child grew the step mother came to hate her.Yeh---Shen was very beautiful and kind, her step sister was ugly and selfish. So the step mother made sure that Yeh---Shen always got the worse jobs and made sure no one talked to her. The only
friend she had was a beautiful fish with big golden eyes. Every day Yeh---Shen visited the fish, they spent hours together talking,Yeh---Shen saved part of her daily food for the fish.
On finding out about the fish , Yeh---Shens step mother disguised herself as Yen --Shen and enticed the fish from the water. She killed the fish and cooked it for dinner. When Yeh---Shen found out she was very sad.
As she sat crying she herd a voice and looked up to see a elderly man dressed in a red and gold robe. he had a white beard and long white hair flowing over his shoulders. He told her that the bones of the fish were filled with a powerful spirit, and that
when she really needed the spirites help all she would need to do would be to kneel before his the bones and ask.He also warned Yeh---Shen not to waste their gifts.
Yeh---Shen dried her eyes and retrieved the fish bones from the trash heap. She took them and hid them in a safe place.Time past and the spring festival and new year celebrations were almost there. This was a time of great celebration. The young
people of the village would gather to meet each other and find husbands and wives.
Yeh---Shen wanted so badly to go to the spring festival celebrations but her step mother would not allow it. She was afraid someone would want to take Yen--- Shen for thier wife rather than her own daughter. The stepmother and daughter left the home for the festival. Yeh---shen wanted desperaetly to ask the bones for help, but she thought it was too selfish.
Suddenly she was wearing a beautiful gown of azure blue and a cloak of kingfisher feathers. On her feet were a pair of slippers woven of golden threads in a pattern of a scaled fish. The soles of her slippers were solid gold. When she walked she felt lighter than air. She was warned not to lose the slippers.
When Yeh---Shen arrived at the festival everyone stopped what they were doing and watched her walk past. The step-mother and daughter started twoards her because they thought they knew this beautiful person.Seeing them Yeh---Shen ran out of the village. When she got back to her home her clothes had turned back to her plain clothes and she had lost one of her slippers. She hid the other slipper in her bed straw and cried herself to sleep.
After a time a merchant found the lost slipper and sold it to another merchant who gave it to the emporer of the island kingdom of T"o Han.
The emporer wanted to find the owner of this tiny beautiful slipper. He sent people to search the kingdom but it was in vain, no ones foot would fit it. He had the slipper put on display in a pavilion on the side of the road where the slipper had been found,a announcement was made that the slipper was to be returned to the owner. The emperors men waited out of site. All the women in the kingdom came to try on the slipper.
One dark night Yeh---Shen went to the pavilion ,took the slipper and turned to leave, but the emporers men stopped her. They arrested her and took her to the emporer, he could not believe any one in rags could possibly own a golden slipper.
The emporer and his men returned home with her where she produced the other slipper. as she slipped the slippers on her feet her clothes turned into the beautiful ones she had worn to the festival. The emporer married Yeh---Shen and they lived happily
the rest of thier lives.
The stepmother and daughter were never allowed to even visit Yeh---Shen and they were eventually crushed to death in a shower of flying stones, which happened one evening while they were eating fish for dinner.
