. The Four Dragons
Chinese people around the world proudly proclaim themselves to be direct desendants of the dragon. The dragon is the divine mythical creature that can bring abundance, prosperity and good fortune. It is said to represent greatness, goodness and blessings. Unlike the western dragon most eastern dragons are very beautiful, friendly and wise.Instead of being hated and feared, they are loved and worshiped. They control the rain, rivers, lakes and seas Most of them live on or near large bodies of water.
The four dragons is a ancient chinese fairy tale that shows the true character of the oriental dragon.
Once upon a time there were no rivers or lakes on earth. There was only the eastern sea. This is where the four dragons lived. They were the long dragon, the yellow dragon, the black dragon and the pearl dragon.
One day the four dragons were playing hide and seek in the clouds when the pearl dragon suddenly stopped and cried out,"Come over here quickly!"
Looking where the pearl dragon was pointing the other dragons saw people putting out fruits and cakes, and burning incense,The people were praying. A very old white haired woman, with a small child on her back voice drifted up to them.God of heaven please send rain, so our children can have rice to eat.
There had been no rain for so long that the land had turned yellow and brown. The crops had withered and the earth had cracked under the scorching sun.
"How poor the people are",said the yellow dragon. " They will die if they don't get rain soon!"
The long dragn agreed,"lets go and talk to the jade emporer." So saying he lept into the clouds. The others followed closely and they all flew twoards the emperors heavenly palace.
The jade emperor was very powerful. He was in charge of all things in heaven , on earth and in the sea. He was not pleased to see the dragons rushing in and disturbing him. When the dragons had landed he demanded to know why they were disturbing him.
The long dragon stepped forward and after apologising for disturbing the emperor, explained that the crops were dying, the ground was cracking and burnig and without rain soon the mortal people of earth would die !He begged the emperor to send rain and save the people befor it was too late.
The jade emperor replyed,"All right, you go back and do not bother me any more and I will send rain tomorrow "\ The four dragons thanked the emperor and returned to the earth. But ten days passed and no rain fell!
The people suffered greatly .Some ate bark, some ate grass or roots and some were forced to eat white clay when the other things ran out.Seeing all this, the four dragons felt very sorry for the people. They knew the jade emperor only cared about himself and his own pleasure. He never took the mortal people of earth to heart. They knew it was up to them to help these people,
Looking at the sea the long dragon came up with a plan.He and the other dragons begain scooping up water from the sea and spraying the land with it.The four dragons knew the jade emperor would be mad and they would be punished for doing this. But they also knew the people of ancient china would die with out their help..
The dragons flew back and forth to the sea spreading the sea water over the land, the sky became dark and rain came pouring down from the sky.The people started shouting and giving thanks to the dragons for the rain.
The god of the sea discovered what was going on and reported what was going on to the jade emperor. The jade emperor was enraged, that the dragons had brought rain without his permission was too much. They would pay dearly for this outrage.
He ordered the heavenly generals to arrest the dragons and bring them to him.
Being greatly out numbered the dragons could not defend themselves. The four dragons were arested and taken before the jade emperor. The jade emperor ordered the mountain king to bring four mountains and lay one over each dragon so they could not escape.Once this was done the jade emperor thought he had them imprisoned for all eternity.Imprisoned as they were, the dragons never regreted their actions.Determined to do good for the people forever the dragons turned themselves into four great rivers. The rivers flowed past the mountains and deep valleys, crossing the land from west to east and so Chinas four great rivers were formed. The Heilongjian (black dragon) in the far north. The Huanghe (Yellow dragon) River in
central china. The Changjiang (Yangtze, or long river)in the far south, and the Zhujiang (pearl) river in the very far south.
